Solar Energy For Your Home –
Today.
Solar
energy has existed for five billion years,
since the sun was born. And humans have been using solar
energy for thousands of years. Technically solar energy is
most every kind of energy we use
today stored
as oil, coal,
wind, and even wood.
Oil is
petroleum from which we make gasoline, diesel,
jet fuel, and a host of other derivatives.
The sun made the energy,
which fed the microorganisms, plants and creatures, which
have over the millennia turned into oil. – Oil is liquid
sunshine fixed for us chemically till we burn it in our
“solar” car.
Solar energy
systems have no fuel costs, no meter on the
sun, so most of their cost comes from the original
investment in equipment to collect it in a useable form
whether it be oil wells to collect “black gold” or solar
collectors and panels to collect the sun’s energy
directly.
Photovoltaic (PV)
cells are
devices that convert sunlight to electricity, bypassing
thermodynamic cycles (turbines) or mechanical
generators.
PV stands for photo
(light) and voltaic (electricity), whereby sunlight photons
jostle electrons loose from common silicon and funneled them
down a wire.
Photovoltaic
systems became an important power source
originally for our space missions. Solar cells enabled
America to explore space, the solar system, and the Earth in
great detail.
Today the time is fast
approaching where we may use the sun directly to power our
homes and even our cars without the chemical carrier,
(Gasoline)
Some problems
still exist:
Current standard cells have a theoretical
maximum efficiency of 31 percent because of the electronic
properties of the silicon material. But new materials,
arranged in novel ways, can evade that limit, with some
multi layer cells reaching 34 percent efficiency. Currently,
there is a desperate need for solar research to wean
ourselves off our oil based pollution heavy economy.
Compared to the old forms of depletable energy (coal, oil,
nuclear), solar energy will offers a clean renewable
alternative form of energy in the near future or even
NOW!
Renewable
Energy currently accounts for 9% of total
energy consumption and is projected to increase
exponentially as better solar cells emerge. Renewable-energy
technologies promise to liberate us from fossil
fuels.
Solar powered
homes are
feasible now – we just need to stop listening to the
nay-sayers and start our own Solar Energy Revolution
